Step by step e-commerce plan

Building an e-commerce business can be overwhelming. But taking you through the journey of finding your product to selling your product can be found in this step by step guide e-commerce plan.

If you have a great idea than your one of the lucky people who are on the first step to a great adventure. But if you are still looking for a great idea then start here

Nothing is more demotivating than spending money and time on an online business that does not take off. Many online businesses fail because they never validate their idea with there target audience. How would you like to find out if your idea even before even actually creating anything?

1. Write up your e-commerce plan on a single page

You don’t have to write a big e-commerce plan to find out if you have a good online business idea. Just create a single page with what problem you want to solve, how you propose to solve it, at what price that solution is going to be sold an by who. If you are looking for a example, you can find a online business one-pager here ;

A lot about your idea will be assumptions, but that is ok. Try to provide as much research about the problem you are trying to solve and be ok with some assumptions you make. You will test these assumptions with your target audience.

2. Create a list of questions

What do you want to know from your potential customers about your online business that can help you build the best possible solution to their problem? Here are some example questions ;

– What problem do you encounter when you perform task x (insert the task your solution is trying to solve here)
– How do you solve this problem now?
– Where did you learn about this solution?
– What are you looking for in a solution/product?
– On a daily basis, what online platforms do you use?

Remember to try to ask questions without trying to steer your subject into the direction you want to confirm your solution. It’s better, to be honest to yourself than to create a false assumption. You rather want to hear that your solution is not suited now than working on a solution that will not work later.

3. Send your e-commerce plan one-pager to 10 friends and ask for feedback

To help your online business succeed try and find out what your friends think about your new online business. First of all, this is a great way to find out if you need to change anything to an idea before you launch it and find out what is important for your target audience when you start selling. Besides finding out if your idea is a good find with your friends, you get comfortable pitching your idea to people and getting your story straight.

Asking the right questions is crucial in this step. Asking the wrong questions or even the wrong way will give you bad and false feedback which will eventually lead to a lot of wasted time. A good example is by using the mom test which is explained in the validation book tip listed below.

4. Send your e-commerce plan one-pager to 10 people in your target audience

When you have your first 10 feedback insights, it is time to ask strangers what they think of your e-commerce business by asking them the same questions.

But where do you find those 10 strangers? Facebook groups, Quora, Reddit, or Instagram are great places to start. So if you are building a finance app? Go on Quora and ask people what they are using now to manage their finances? Go on Instagram and ask a small influencer if she would like to ask her audience what they think about your business. Find relevant Facebook groups and ask people for 5 minutes of their time. You only need 10, so you might as well even go out on the street.

The mom test

By ; Jonh Mullins

Asking the right questions can be very difficult. Asking a question the wrong way and you will end up with an answer that will lead you in the wrong direction and maybe even cost you a lot of money. In this book, you learn how to ask the proper question to find the answers that will guide you in the right direction. A great read before you set out to validate your e-commerce plan.

Very specific examples to the right questions and can be directly put to use.

🏆 4,5 rating on

5. Use the answers to improve or leave your idea

Collect all your answers and groups them to the top 3 improvements that can be made to your idea. Did they already have a solution to the problem you are trying to solve? Did they think your solution was not good enough? Did they not want to pay money for your solution? After your 10 friends and 10 strangers, you will have a good sense of this idea might fly or die. Have a good feeling about the idea? move onwards! great, let’s get some customers.

Feel like your idea has too much feedback? Don’t worry, look if there are any improvements you can make from the feedback you received and try again from step 1. Feel like there is no potential for your idea? That’s fine! Look at it this way, without this small test, you might have to spend a lot of time and money on the idea without ever making any money in the end.

6. Embrace feedback

Your idea is your pride and joy and receiving feedback on your idea can be hard sometimes. We see a lot of new online businesses not growing because they do not listen to their first feedback. Listen to what your audience has to say and don’t put a lot of weight on every feedback you receive. Start collecting as much feedback as possible and always ask why someone gives you this feedback. Look at this feedback as a great way to improve your online business and try to see that this feedback will form the backbone of your future customer success. Try the fail as soon as possible and learn from your mistakes. Put all your learnings in your e-commerce plan

Building up an audience before even launching your online business will give you a better chance at launch. If you build a list or even a small group of people following your launch it is going to be a great start. Learn all about gathering your first audience in this e-commerce plan.

Imagine putting a lot of time and money into your new e-commerce business and you press the button to launch and nothing happens. We see a lot of people build great e-commerce businesses but never receiving 1 customer. That’s why it’s great to turn that one-pager from the first step into a sign-up page and start building an audience.

When you have a couple of people interested in your idea, the only thing you have to do is to let them know your solution is now available to order.

1. Create a sign-up page

The one-pager from step one is a great way to build a single page with your online business proposal and ask people to get notified when you have launched your e-commerce business. Tell your potential customer, what you will offer when your online business goes live and ask them to sign up to get notified.

How do you create a sign-up page?

– Fill in the e-commerce plan one-pager
– Think of a domain name (need help?)
– Find a landing page builder
– Register a domain name
– Install the landing page builder
– Fill the landing page with content from the online business one-pager
– Set up a sign-up flow

Sign up flow

Think about the experience a customer goes through connecting with your e-commerce business and write it down.

❗ Always test your sign up flow before reaching out to anyone.

Create a compelling message to tell your audience about your e-commerce business and share it

Create a sign up page where you reflect your message and tell why someone should sign up for your launch

Follow up

Make sure you are able to follow up with the people who have signed up for your launch.

When it comes to hosting, you want to go for the solution that is the easiest to use. Especially when you are just starting, the more options, the more complicated it gets. When you have chosen to go for easy website builders like Squarespace or Wix they offer to hosting and that’s the best option if you go for a website builder. 🔨 Landing page builder tip

Building a landing page has become very easy with great platforms like Squarespace, WordPress, Unbounce, and Convertkit. Some of them are listed below

What to look for; Look for a landing page builder that is easy to use (user-friendly interface, pre-built templates, and easy integrations) and think of what you want to build the upcoming year and if this landing page builder will suit your needs. When building an e-commerce business, the landing page builder does not have to be the same as the e-commerce platform, but it depends on how complex your e-commerce platform needs to be.

Website builders are a great and easy way to build simple webpages fast. Squarespace is a great tool that helps you display your online business at a low cost and you don’t need a lot of time to build a simple page because of all the preset settings and lay-outs. E-commerce features for this option are limited, but it will bring you a long way.

✅ The easiest way to build a landingpage

❌ Can be difficult to expand on

💰 Starting at $82 / year

WordPress is the biggest platform to drive traffic around the internet. With a big community, you will find some great tools to build your landing page. It can be a bit more difficult than website builders Squarespace and Unbounce, but is more futureproof and customizable

Pro’s & cons

Both Convertkit and Unbounce are great options as well. Where Convertkit is more focused on getting a good email flow setup. Unbounce is a great landing page builder with a lot of persuasion options like pop-ups and content locks. But they both come at a higher price.

These options do not offer to extend into a full e-commerce business

Pro’s & cons

✅ Unbounce is a true landingpage building gem

✅ Convertkit has great options to build emailflows

❌ Unbounce starts at $960 / year

❌ Convertkit landingpage options are limited

💰 Unbounce $960 / year

💰 Convertkit $350 / year

2. Find your audience

When you know where your audience is you can start telling them about your new online business and learn from your audience what they want. But how do you find where your audience does their research, ask for questions, or buy their products? It helps if you are part of the audience yourself. Think about all the websites you use, the social networks you visit, or how you find out about products yourself.

– Think about the platforms you use yourself when you are part of the audience yourself
– Ask your 20 subjects what platforms they use when you talk about your online business in part 1
– Go through the following platforms Reddit, Quora, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook and find groups that are relevant to your audience

🔨 Audience finder tip

Fiding your audience is time consuming but there are a couple of big channel to consider when searching for your audience listed below ;

🌄 Outside

The cheapest & most effective way to reach your audience is by simply contacting them directly in person, by phone, or by email. Look around and find friends, family, and people at work who might be interested in your product and ask them to provide you with feedback.

Google can be a big audience driver from day one for your e-commerce business. Either by paying for potential customers through AdWords or ranking high in the organic results. Always look at how to use Google to your advantage from day one

Social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are great platforms to connect with your audience. Post in Facebook groups, images on Instagram with the right hashtags or tweet about your e-commerce business to get feedback

For each e-commerce business, there is a group of people who have their community online or offline. Join the discussion on platforms like Quora or Reddit to reach out to people who will take a look at your e-commerce business.

3. Talk to your audience

Get involved in conversations within the different platforms and answer any questions your audience has. Don’t start selling your online business right away. Being part of an audience means you have to give a lot before you can ask for help yourself.

It’s also good to see the topics your audience is interested in solving. For example in the photography audience a lot of times people ask what camera to buy when they just starting out. That’s a great problem to solve.

4. Ways to attract your audience

When you want to attract the attention of your audience, it is all about providing value to the community. Here are a couple of ideas on how you can add value for your audience

– Create a free tool

Help your audience first, before asking your audience to help you. One way is by building a tool that your audience can use. Think of building a checklist, setting up a free course, create a favorites list, etc. It does not have to be very technical, but if you do have some technical skills to build things like a calculator or configurator then go ahead.

– Start writing

Your audience is always looking for answers to their questions to solve their problem. What is the best pillow? What is the best smartphone for my parents? or top 10 bathing suits for this summer. Start writing answers to these questions, start writing about what inspires you and share it with friends.

Don’t know what to write about? take a look at our ways to find topics?

Don’t know where to write? take a look at our top 3 places to publish your content

– Set up a giveaway

You are always able to give something to your community, being it either in terms of money or in time. Are you not able to buy and provide a give away like a subscription to a local gym for your fitness audience then you might be able to provide a skill that you have like giving your audience an hour of your time to create a personal fitness plan?

– Direct mail, DM, call …

Still one of the most effective (but not the most scalable) is by contacting your audience directly and asking if they are interested in your online business. For example, you see Alex on Instagram always posting about his shopping spree over the weekend and purchasing fashion right in your target audience. Ask Alex what he thinks of your fashion brand and see if you could work together on improving your product. Or see that a friend of a friend on Linkedin is working for that company that you would like to sell your customized t-shirt to. Ask if you could have a call about what they look for when they select a partner to work with.

– Collaborations

It is always nice to work together with other like-minded people. Start reaching out to people in your industry that you think are good collaborations to set up. Don’t go and contact them right away but think of what you can offer. If you have not created anything, have no people following you then it might not be a win-win situation. You want to offer your new friend something as well. Think of a skill you can offer or a good idea to work on together.

– Paid marketing

This last way of reaching your audience is not the best way to reach your audience. Especially reaching your first 100 customers through paid marketing can get very expensive because people have to get familiar with your business. When you already have your first customer the word of mouth through paid marketing is a great way to reach new customers.

That said, paid marketing still is a way to reach your audience. Try some channels at the beginning with small budgets and see what happens. But be sure you have set up the right email sign up flows before even looking at paid marketing as a way to reach your audience.

Now the fun part begins and you need to start building your e-commerce business. You have validated your idea, found your first audience and now it is time to help your audience with your online business with this step of the e-commerce plan.

Building an e-commerce building can be very scary at first. For the next step you will need the following from the previous steps ;

– Your online business one-pager
– Picked a domain name
– Build a sign-up page

Now it is time to select an e-commerce platform

E-commerce platforms

Choosing the platform is like selecting the foundation of your house, you want it to support whatever you are building on it and you know it will last as long as possible. Things to watch when you select your e-commerce platform

1. What are you planning to sell?
Are you planning on selling a physical product, digital product or are you planning to build a service? Each platform has pros and cons but if you are planning on selling a physical product go with either Shopify and WordPress because they offer the most amount of options to connect with other platforms for shipping, customer service, payment, and other parts of your e-commerce business.

Selling a digital product is a bit different because you are less dependant on other platforms besides payments. For that reason, Shopify is your best option.

2. What features are you looking for?
If you are in need of a special feature that is not in one of the 2 platforms by default or can be bought through their communities (plugins for WordPress & apps for Shopify) then you might want to consider going for a custom build. Our advice would be to research the options you have with either of those platforms and see if you can find a solution that suits your needs (or maybe 80%). Because building a feature from scratch can be very time & money consuming.

Nine times out of ten your features will be covered by one of the two platforms and easier to use when it’s already built and used by other users.

3. What other platforms do you work with?
Are you already using other platforms for email, shipping, or payments? It’s worth making sure the e-commerce platform you choose is working with the platforms you are already using.

Other platforms

There are a lot of other e-commerce platforms, but when you are starting out limit yourself to either of these platforms because of their ease of use and big community support. Other platforms like Magento or website builders like Wix and Squarespace usually do a fine job too, but at this point, they are not as suitable as the ones mentioned above.

E-commerce design

Your e-commerce business is going to need a design, a design that reflects your vision and product. There are a lot of free great e-commerce designs that are compatible with your e-commerce platform. By just easily googling “free [e-commerce platform] e-commerce design” you should find some free designs.

If you are willing to spend a bit of money on a design, that’s a great idea. Usually, the paid e-commerce design offers a lot of value for just a couple of bucks. Using a paid e-commerce design also gives your customer a better feeling when visiting your e-commerce business which relates to more sales.

What to look for when selecting an e-commerce design?

Besides the visual aspects that will match your appeal, there is a couple of technical features to look for when selecting an e-commerce design. These features are the following;

Make sure the team you select has some speed to it. Not only do search engines like Google love fast loading e-commerce websites but also customers are always in a hurry. Making sure your e-commerce design is optimized for speed will turn into profits. You can look for what loading speed the designer is offering and also check the demo URLs with tools like GTmetrix and Google.

More than half of all your customers will visit your e-commerce business using their phones. Having an e-commerce business not performing on their phone is a big miss. Check your design on a phone and see if you would purchase anything yourself.

Not all e-commerce designs are supported by all e-commerce platforms. Make sure that you look at e-commerce designs that are optimized and build specially for the e-commerce platform you are using.

Working with e-commerce designs can always create trouble. Not being able to get the right buttons, Not getting the right images, or missing some fonts? Having good design support is essential when you are building your e-commerce business. So check how your e-commerce design is being supported and how long you will be able to contact the designer after you purchased it.

E-commerce platforms update very frequently for new features or security improvements. If your e-commerce design does not have a frequent update schedule, your e-commerce business might miss out on all these new updates from your e-commerce platform. So make sure to check how often your designer updates your e-commerce design.

Every e-commerce business has some standard pages that support your e-commerce business. By telling about what your e-commerce business stands for or how it handles return you can not only help your customers decide, but also save yourself a lot of time and money running customer support. Consider building the following pages ;

An e-commerce business homepage is like a storefront on the internet. This is where you try to attract your visitor as quickly as possible by showing what you have to offer. A lot of people assume potential customers enter an e-commerce business through the homepage, but actually a lot of people visit your e-commerce business through your product page or if you have one a category page. Your homepage should have navigation, your proposition, and a good starting point to the products you are selling.

About us
This is the page where you tell your customer a bit more about your e-commerce business. This page is an opportunity to tell what your e-commerce business is about and what you value as a person or a company. An about us e-commerce business page should have your story (how did you decide to build an e-commerce business), What your goals are with your e-commerce business, and a bit on why your e-commerce business is different than others.

Category page
Some more complex e-commerce businesses have multiple categories to sell. A fashion e-commerce business could be selling jeans and t-shirts for instance. This means categories like tops and bottoms could be relevant for a customer to easily navigate your e-commerce business. Instead of offering an endless list of products, category pages help your customer navigate to the right product. Category pages usually are used for just that

Product page
Your product page might be the single most important page in your e-commerce business. This is the last page before your customer decides to make a purchase or leave. When you build your product page, consider using; Good images (clear and showing all the features of your product), a product description, specifications, reviews, potential awards, and of course a buy button.

One of the fun parts of building an e-commerce business is getting paid for your solutions. When it comes to shipping there are a lot of local solutions specific to your country. When you ship a physical product, shipping is a very important part of your customer experience. What do you need to look for in a reliable shipping partner?

Take a good look at how good your shipping partner is able to integrate with the e-commerce platform and email solution you are using. You want to inform your customer as well as possible on their shipment. This will not only result in better customer experience but also lower your customer support questions about shipments.

Shipping fees
Shipping fees are a big part of your cost. Usually, shipping partners are offering you lower fees with higher volumes. But when you are starting out, shipping fees can take a big chunk out of your profit. So take a good look at if the shipping fee makes sense for your product. If not, either increase your margin or look for a lower offer.

If your product requires special handling, make sure your shipping partner is able to provide you with the service you need in order to get your product to your customer safely. Taking this into consideration when selecting a shipping partner will prevent you from having customers not being satisfied with your service.
